In 1994, a divine wind blew on Hoppy Beverage in the form of an amendment to the Liquor Tax Act. This revision reduced the minimum annual manufacturing amount that had been set at 200 kiloliters to 60 kiloliters. “Making beer embodies man’s adventurous spirit.” This dream that founder Hide continued to carry was finally realized by current chairman Koichi Ishiwatari. In 1995, the company became the fifth in Japan to obtain a craft beer brewing license. On July 7th of that same year, it changed its name from Kokuka Beverage Company to Hoppy Beverage Co., Ltd. Ever the businessman, Koichi chose this day because of its fortuitous aligning of 7’s. Renewing its determination and resolution as a general beverage manufacturer, Hoppy took advantage of its over half a century of experience making HOPPY to begin to brew and sell AKASAKA BEER and JINDAIJI BEER. It received acclaim for its high quality and consistent flavor, and in 1999 it acquired a permanent license. Going forward, Hoppy Beverage will continue to work towards developing unique craft beer by utilizing the original brewing capability it has cultivated via HOPPY.
